Educator of the Year and Helping Hands AwardsPosted: October 31, 2013
One of my very favorite things that we do as a PTA Council is to honor the Educator of the Year and Helping Hands Recipients each year at the Installation & Recognition Celebration in May. In Lakewood, we are fortunate to have some really awesome teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty. We are also very fortunate to have volunteers in our schools that also go above and beyond the call of duty to support PTA events and help PTA volunteers pull of programs that benefit kids and families.
In November, it will be time to appoint an Educator of the Year/Helping Hands Chairperson for each PTA/PTSA Unit (unless already appointed) and begin the search for nominations within your school community. Every student, parent, teacher, and staff member is eligible to nominate a teacher for the Educator of the Year Award (must be a certified teacher in your school) and nominate anyone (as long as they are NOT a teacher) working in the school as a staff member or parent/student volunteer for the Helping Hands Award.
Each PTA unit will choose their own Educator of the Year and Helping Hands winner from all of the nominations that are received. Those winners must fill out an official Nomination Form to be sent to Council by February 1st for consideration for the Council Awards. Council will forward a nomination form the winners of each grade level to the Ohio PTA to represent the nomination from District 11.
This is a great time to get creative and get everyone involved in the process. PTAs are not required to use the official form to gather nominations (only for the official nomination to Council). Many schools work with their teachers to help students write an essay to nominate a teacher or volunteer, and many have created their own forms for nominations. It is also a great way to involve parents who may not have been able to contribute much in the past. Most parents love the opportunity to nominate a favorite teacher.
Jenny Beno, 2nd Vice President of Council will be overseeing the Educator of the Year and Helping Hand Award process with chairpersons from each school. She has created an Educator of the Year/Helping Hands Awards Guidelines & Requirements. Please contact Jenny if you have questions about the process.
Did you know that Ohio and National PTA offer many opportunities for PTAs to win awards and money?
